  • Elf Lore:

Tantagon was a monk, part of a long defunct star-worshiping order. One day a dwarf arrived at the monastery complex and asked asylum for his peoples who were under attack by a horde of goblins. Tantagon refused the dwarfs because they lived beneath the earth, out of sight of the stars, and were therefore suspect. As it turned out, the dwarfs beat back the goblins and retook their home. When they returned to the Underland, the dug deep wells and then collapsed the sinkhole in which the Ranatos River disappeared, flooding the nearby countryside. The song was popular in taverns ten-fold-ten years past. What the tavern-goers didn't know, of course, was that the monks drowned themselves that their spirits might eternally guard the monastery and whatever enshrinement lay within and that the only man to escape the mass suicide hung himself after relating the events to the man Fattraf, who later became one of the best talesmiths of his ten-year. Of course, they didn't forget the verse about drinking up to spare their spirits, trust me, its wittier after a few pints...

It's a poem in ancient elf script. Pretty much familiar to you.

Five brave warriors stay, lest evil rise
Give life and spirit to serve well as guard
Yet knowing death will come in turn to take
Each elf perish for sake of home and life.
Unknown in name yet valor remember'd.
